Gated Measurements

In radio-frequency engineering, even the smallest deviations can determine the performance of a product. To reliably identify points of interference, the right measurement technology and precise measurement methods are essential.

The foundation for  meaningful radio-frequency measurements on one-port and multi-port networks is  the vector network analyzer (VNA). It enables precise characterization of  signal paths, components, and complete radio-frequency-systems. However, even  after careful calibration at the measurement ports, there may still be a signal  path between the measuring instrument and the point of interest that can influence the measurement result.

This is exactly where gated measurement comes into play. With this method, the measurement is specifically focused on a defined section of the transmission line. Signal components before and after the relevant area are mathematically excluded, so that only the structure of actual interest is evaluated. This allows reflections, mismatches, or impedance discontinuities to be localized and represented numerically with significantly greater precision.

High measurement bandwidths are required to achieve high distance resolution. Modern VNA systems make this detailed analysis possible and provide valuable insights for the development, optimization, and troubleshooting of radio-frequency networks.
